Every day there are patients across Canada trying to find a stem cell match that could save their life. Most often a stem cell match comes from a person of similar ethnic origins. For Canada’s indigenous community, finding a match poses a significant challenge as less than 2 percent of registered donors come from an Indigenous background.
This story features Tanners search to find a match. Tanner McLeod receives monthly blood transfusions to replenish his red blood cells as he continues to wait for a stem cell match. With such a small percentage of Indigenous registered finding a match for Tanner remains a major challenge.
Hockey Gives Blood is honoured to team up with Jordin Tootoo in an effort to create awareness among all Canadians but especially the indigenous community. Since retiring from his playing days in the NHL Jordin has become a leading advocate for those of indigenous decent and we are very grateful for that Jordin has lent his voice to help save lives with Hockey Gives Blood and Canadian Blood Services.
The Canadian Stem Registry is easy to sign up for. Just go to blood.ca and a swab kit will be sent right to your house. Simply follow the instructions, swab your cheek and mail it back.
On behalf of everyone at Hockey Gives Blood, we thank you for giving hope to patients like Tanner.
